"The backup folder does not exist" error

If you’re seeing an error stating your backup folder does not exist, this means Scrivener cannot access the backup folder you have set in the application’s settings, perhaps because it has been moved, renamed, or deleted.

When you encounter this error, please navigate to the Backup pane under Scrivener > Settings… and make note of the folder that is selected next to “Backup location:”. This folder is now inaccessible, so you will need to create and select a new backup folder.

Your backup folder can be stored wherever you like, but please ensure that it is its own dedicated folder, and that there is nothing else stored within it apart from the automatic backup copies that Scrivener creates. Alternatively, you can use the default backup folder, located at /Users/YourUsername/Library/Application Support/Scrivener/Backups.

To select a new folder, click the “Choose…” button in the Backup settings pane next to the currently selected folder, which will bring up a Finder window. Browse to your new backup folder, select it, then save your changes.

Next time Scrivener backs up your project, you shouldn’t run into any issues, but please contact us for further assistance if needed.
